Trigger Settings

What Are Trigger Settings?

Trigger Settings allow the user to put restrictions on a shortcut so that it only triggers a text replacement or snippet preview under certain conditions.

To access the settings, simply click on the cog icon to the right of the snippet:

accessing advanced options

This will open the Advanced Options window, where the Trigger Settings live. There are three options available:

Always Trigger

always trigger option
How It Works

Always trigger is the default setting for all snippets. With this option, when the shortcut is typed it will always trigger the text expansion or display the snippet preview (depending on which mode you have selected). There are no advanced restrictions preventing the trigger.

Trigger Only If ... New Word

trigger only as new word option
How It Works

When this option is selected, typing the shortcut will only trigger the text expansion or snippet preview if it is being typed as a new word and not inside another word.

How does PepperText recognise new words?

PepperText considers a shortcut to be typed as a new word when it is preceded immediately by any of the below character sets:

  • ' ' (space)
  • '     ' (tab space)
  • ' (' (space followed by an open bracket)
  • ' {' (space followed by an open curly bracket)
  • ' (' (space followed by an open square bracket)
  • ' *' (space followed by an asterisk)
  • ' "' (space followed by a double quotation mark)
  • ' '' (space followed by a single quotation mark)
  • unknown (if PepperText does not know what preceded the shortcut.
Example
trigger only as new word example snippet

In the above example we've set the shortcut 'eta' to expand to 'estimated time of arrival'. However 'eta' is a common three letter sequence. So to prevent it from popping up as we type a lot of other words, such as dietary, tetanus, and cheetah, we can set the shortcut to only trigger if the shortcut is typed as a new word.

Trigger Only If ... Custom Text

trigger only if custom text precedes
How It Works

When this option is selected, typing the shortcut will only trigger the text expansion or snippet preview if it is typed after custom text of your choosing. Type each custom text in the box provided, one per line.

Example
trigger only if custom text precedes example snippet

The above snippet is set to instantly replace the asterisk symbol with the degree symbol as soon as it's typed. You can see that the advanced settings cog is 'on' as we have altered the trigger settings:

trigger only if custom text precedes example text

In this example the shortcut (an asterisk) will only turn into a degree symbol if the user has typed one of the custom texts immediately before it, in this case a number (eg. 90°).
